Custom tear strip boxes incorporate a perforated opening strip that allows customers to open the package quickly without scissors or other tools. Once removed, the strip provides visible evidence that the original closure has been opened, making this structure suitable for ecommerce, subscription, retail, and promotional packaging.
The pictured example features metallic gold paper, a rectangular folding structure, and an integrated pull tab with shaped ends. The tear-strip position, length, width, perforation pattern, and pull-tab shape can be customized according to the box construction and preferred opening direction.
Depending on the intended application, the box can include tuck flaps, locking tabs, adhesive sealing strips, reinforced walls, internal platforms, compartments, and protective inserts. An optional second adhesive strip can also be added when a resealable return-ready shipping package is required.
Custom printing and finishing can be applied across the exterior and interior surfaces. Available branding options include offset printing, screen printing, foil stamping, embossing, debossing, spot UV, and specialty paper wraps.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Tear Strip Boxes
What is a custom tear strip box?
A custom tear strip box includes a prepared tear-open section that allows customers to open the package without scissors or a knife.
Tear strips are commonly used for e-commerce orders, subscription boxes, cosmetics, electronics, apparel, gifts and promotional kits. They can improve opening convenience while creating a more controlled unboxing experience.
How does a paper tear strip work?
The opening section is created using perforations, parallel cut lines, reinforced tear tape or another engineered tear path. Pulling the tab separates the designated section from the box while leaving the remaining structure largely intact.
The appropriate design depends on the board type, flute direction, paper strength, coating and required opening force. A production sample should be tested because different materials do not tear in exactly the same way.
Is a tear strip box tamper-evident?
A single-use tear strip can provide visible evidence that the opening area has been removed or disturbed. This can help customers recognize whether the package may have been opened.
However, a paper tear strip should not automatically be described as tamper-proof or security-certified. Products requiring regulated security may also need seals, labels or other validated tamper-evident components.
Can a tear strip box be resealed after opening?
The original tear strip itself is normally single-use and cannot be restored after removal. A secondary tuck flap, adhesive strip, locking tab or separate return closure may be added when the customer needs to close the box again.
For e-commerce returns, the structure can potentially include one opening strip and a separate resealing method. These requirements should be confirmed during structural development because they affect the dieline, cost and packing process.
Which corrugated flute should I choose?
Available corrugated materials may include E-flute, B-flute and F-flute. F-flute and E-flute provide a thinner profile and relatively smooth printing surface for lightweight retail or e-commerce products.
B-flute is thicker and generally provides greater cushioning for heavier products. The final choice should be based on the product weight, dimensions, fragility, shipping method and desired appearance.
Does adding a tear strip weaken the box?
A tear line creates a deliberate weak point, so its position must be engineered carefully. Placing it too close to a corner, handle, load-bearing panel or closure may reduce box strength or cause accidental opening.
Adequate board width should remain around the tear path, and the opening force should be tested with the actual packed product. The tear strip should open cleanly during use while remaining secure during packing and transportation.
Can inserts and unboxing accessories be added?
Yes. Paperboard inserts, corrugated dividers, molded pulp, EVA foam and other fitted components can be added to control product movement and organize several items.
Tissue paper, logo stickers, cards and printed booklets can also be coordinated through our custom packaging accessories collection. These elements should not obstruct the tear path or make the package difficult to open.
What is the difference between a tear strip box and a standard mailer box?
A custom mailer box commonly uses a roll-end tuck-top closure that can be opened by lifting the lid. A tear strip box creates a defined, usually single-use opening path that can provide clearer evidence of first opening.
Either structure may be suitable for e-commerce packaging. The choice depends on whether the priority is easy repeated access, visible first opening, return convenience or presentation.
Can tear strip boxes be printed and recycled?
Yes. Available printing may include CMYK, Pantone, offset, UV and screen printing. Decorative options include foil stamping, embossing, debossing, spot UV and matte, gloss or soft-touch lamination. Our custom packaging finishes guide explains their visual and cost differences.
Paper-based tear strips can simplify material separation compared with some plastic opening components. However, lamination, foam inserts, adhesive tapes and mixed materials may affect recyclability, so environmental claims should reflect the complete package.
What are the MOQ, price, sample cost and production lead time?
Our standard MOQ is generally 1,000 pieces per design. Unit prices start from approximately US$0.10, but actual pricing depends on the dimensions, corrugated material, tear-strip construction, quantity, printing, finishes and inserts.
Custom samples normally take 3–7 working days and start from approximately US$60. Mass production normally takes approximately 7–15 working days after sample and artwork approval. You can contact our packaging team with your product and opening requirements for an accurate quotation.
