Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Candle Boxes

What types of candles can custom candle boxes hold?

Custom candle boxes can be designed for glass-jar candles, metal tins, ceramic vessels, votives, pillars, wax melts and other scented home-fragrance products.

The structure can be developed for one candle or a coordinated set containing several fragrances, accessories or promotional materials. For multi-candle collections, a custom candle set gift box may provide a more suitable presentation.

Explore our broader fragrance packaging range when developing a coordinated candle or home-scent collection.

How should a candle jar be measured for a custom box?

Measure the candle at its widest and tallest points, including the base, vessel body, lid, knob, label and any decorative components.

Round jars should be measured using their maximum diameter. Additional clearance is required for the insert, board thickness, folding, wrapping paper and manufacturing tolerances.

Candles and lids may vary slightly between production batches, so several final components should be supplied whenever possible. The box should accommodate the agreed maximum product dimensions without allowing excessive movement.

Which box structure is best for candles?

A folding carton can provide an economical retail package for lightweight candles and tins. An auto-lock bottom may improve support for heavier vessels.

Rigid lid-and-base, drawer, hinged or book-style boxes are suitable for premium candles and gift sets. Corrugated structures may provide additional protection for e-commerce or heavier products.

The correct structure depends on the candle weight, vessel material, retail channel, opening experience, required protection and shipping method.

Does a candle box need an internal insert?

An insert is recommended when the candle has significant empty space around it, a fragile glass or ceramic vessel, a decorative lid or multiple components.

Options may include folded paperboard, corrugated board, molded pulp, EVA, foam or thermoformed trays, depending on the project requirements.

The insert should support the base and sides without pressing against fragile lids or surface decorations. Finger notches or ribbon pulls may be added to make a tightly fitted candle easier to remove.

Can candle boxes protect glass jars during shipping?

A fitted retail box and insert can reduce movement and provide structural protection, but they should not automatically be considered complete courier packaging.

Heavy glass jars require support around the base, walls and lid. Multiple units should be separated inside a suitable master carton so that they cannot strike one another.

The complete system—including filled candles, lids, inserts, retail boxes, protective materials and shipping cartons—should undergo appropriate drop, vibration, compression and temperature testing.

Can wax, fragrance oil or heat damage the box?

Wax and fragrance oils can stain, soften or discolor paper if they leak or migrate from the candle vessel. The filled candle, lid and container should therefore pass compatibility and leakage testing before the box is finalized.

Paper packaging should be stored away from excessive heat, direct sunlight and high humidity. A coating or lamination may improve resistance to light handling, but it does not make the box oilproof or heatproof.

The candle must be completely removed from its packaging before lighting. A paper candle box is not a fire-resistant holder, heat shield or safe burning surface.

What safety information should be printed on candle packaging?

Depending on the destination market, required information may include product identity, net weight, manufacturer or responsible company, ingredients or allergen information where applicable, batch code, country of origin and candle-burning warnings.

Common safety guidance may address wick trimming, maximum burn time, placement on a heat-resistant surface and keeping the candle away from children, pets and flammable objects.

Requirements vary by country. The brand or its compliance adviser should approve all warnings, symbols, fragrance information and legal text before printing.

Can a candle box include a window?

Yes. A die-cut window can display the vessel color, label or candle design. It may be left open or fitted with transparent film depending on the required protection.

The window should not weaken panels that support a heavy candle. It must also be positioned so the glass cannot contact sharp paperboard edges during handling.

For products that rely on visibility at retail, review our custom window boxes. A structural sample should be tested before approving the final window dimensions.

Which printing, finishing and sustainable options are available?

Options include CMYK or Pantone printing, matte, gloss or soft-touch lamination, foil stamping, spot UV, embossing, debossing, flocking, glitter and specialty papers.

Dark matte surfaces may show wax marks, fingerprints or dust more easily. Fine foil and embossing details need sufficient spacing and should not interfere with warning text or barcodes. Compare common treatments on our packaging finishes page.

Lower-impact options may include right-sized boxes, recycled or responsibly sourced paper and paper-based inserts, subject to availability. Mixed materials, foam, plastic windows, magnets and lamination may affect recyclability.

What are the MOQ, price, sample cost and production lead time?

The minimum order quantity for custom candle boxes is generally 1,000 pieces per design, with prices starting from approximately US$0.60 per box.

Final pricing depends on the dimensions, material, structure, insert, printing, finishes, window, accessories, number of fragrance versions, quantity and packing requirements.

Custom sample production normally takes 3–7 days, with sample charges starting from approximately US$60. Sample delivery generally takes an additional 3–7 days. Mass production typically requires around 20–30 days after artwork and sample approval.
