What are custom window boxes used for?
Custom window boxes combine a paperboard box with a transparent or open die-cut area that allows customers to see the product before purchase.
They are commonly used for cosmetics, skincare, perfume, candles, toys, electronics, bakery products, chocolates and gift items. The box structure, window shape, material, printing and internal insert can be customized around the product.
Which materials are available for the box and window?
Box materials may include white cardstock, art paper, kraft paper, metallic cardstock, corrugated board and wrapped greyboard. The transparent window is commonly made from PET or another selected clear film.
If plastic reduction is a priority, an open die-cut window without film may be considered when product hygiene, dust protection and handling conditions allow. The suitability of each option depends on the product and target market.
What window thickness should I choose?
The available PET or clear-film thickness may generally range from approximately 0.15 mm to 0.45 mm. Thinner film is lighter and more flexible, while thicker film provides greater rigidity and may resist deformation more effectively.
The correct thickness depends on the window size, unsupported area, box dimensions, product weight and required clarity. A large window normally requires more structural support than a small display opening.
Does adding a window weaken the box?
Removing paperboard to create a window can reduce the stiffness of that panel, particularly when the opening is large or positioned close to folds and corners.
The structure can be strengthened by leaving an adequate paperboard border, selecting a stronger board, adjusting the window shape or adding an internal tray. A physical sample should be tested with the actual product before the final window size is approved.
Can the window shape and position be customized?
Yes. The window can be rectangular, circular, curved or custom die-cut to follow a product outline or graphic element. Its position should reveal the most important part of the product without exposing unattractive components or weakening the carton.
Accurate alignment between the window, printed artwork and product position depends on the dieline, insert design and production tolerances. Very fine or narrow window shapes may be difficult to cut and glue consistently.
How can window film be protected from scratches or fogging?
Film thickness, surface treatment, packing method and handling conditions can affect scratch resistance and clarity. Protective film may be used during production for selected projects, but it may need to be removed before the finished package is displayed.
Fogging usually results from temperature changes, moisture or the packaged product itself. Standard window film does not automatically prevent condensation, so packaging should be tested under the expected storage and retail conditions.
Are window boxes suitable for food products?
Yes, window boxes can be designed for bakery products, chocolates, confectionery and other foods. However, the box, window film, adhesive, liner and tray must be selected according to whether they will have direct or indirect food contact.

Can inserts be added to keep the product aligned with the window?
Yes. Paperboard, molded pulp, EVA foam, thermoformed trays and other inserts can be used to keep the product in the intended position behind the window.
Correct product alignment is especially important when the window reveals a logo, color, bottle shape or decorative surface. The insert should also make the product easy to load and remove without pressing it against the film.
Can window boxes be used for e-commerce shipping?
Most lightweight window cartons are retail or secondary packaging and should be placed inside an outer shipping carton for parcel delivery. The window film and printed surface may be scratched or crushed if shipped without additional protection.
For direct e-commerce shipping, a stronger custom mailer box may be more appropriate. Window boxes can still be placed inside the mailer to combine retail visibility with shipping protection.
