Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Cannelé Boxes

What types of cannelé packaging can be customized?

Custom cannelé boxes can be designed for individual cannelés, multi-piece assortments, tasting sets, seasonal collections, wedding favors and premium bakery gifts.

Available structures may include folding cartons, window boxes, sleeves, drawer boxes and rigid gift boxes. The appropriate structure depends on the number of pastries, their size, whether they are individually wrapped and the required retail or gifting experience.

Explore our broader food packaging collection when developing packaging for several bakery products.

How should cannelés be measured for a custom box?

Measure fully cooled cannelés at their maximum diameter and height. Measurements should include any paper cup, wrapper, topping or decorative component.

Because handmade pastries may vary between baking batches, several production samples should be measured. The insert should accommodate the agreed maximum product dimensions without allowing excessive movement.

For an assortment, provide the exact number of cannelés and preferred arrangement. The box height should leave enough clearance to protect the crown and fluted exterior.

How can the fluted shape and caramelized crust be protected?

Each cannelé should remain upright and separated from neighboring pastries. Direct rubbing can damage the fluted surface, transfer caramelized crumbs and reduce visual presentation.

Individual cavities, paper cups, dividers or fitted trays can help stabilize the products. The cavity should not grip the pastry so tightly that customers damage the crust while removing it.

Finger clearance should be included around each cannelé. A physical fit sample should be tested using fresh production pastries.

Which insert is best for cannelé boxes?

Options may include folded food-suitable paperboard, molded pulp, approved thermoformed trays, paper cups or custom dividers.

Paperboard inserts can create a premium appearance and hold pastries upright. Paper cups may reduce direct contact and help manage crumbs or light oil transfer. A suitable tray may provide more precise cavities for e-commerce or larger assortments.

The insert material and construction should be evaluated for food contact, grease resistance, easy removal and disposal requirements.

Can the printed box touch cannelés directly?

Only materials specifically suitable and documented for the intended direct food-contact application should touch an unwrapped cannelé.

Decorative paperboard, printing inks, adhesives, foil and lamination should not automatically be considered suitable for direct contact. An approved paper cup, liner, tray or wrapper may be required.

Food-contact requirements vary by destination market. The bakery or its food-safety adviser should confirm the required documentation and testing before production.

Can moisture, butter or caramel stain the packaging?

Cannelés contain moisture, butter and a caramelized exterior that may leave grease, crumbs or condensation on paper components.

A suitable cup, liner, tray or primary wrapper may help protect the decorative box. Lamination on the outside does not automatically make the inside greaseproof or food-contact compliant.

The complete pastry, insert and box should undergo storage testing to check staining, condensation, odor, paper deformation and adhesive performance.

Will the box keep cannelés crisp and fresh?

The outer box provides presentation and physical protection but does not independently maintain the crisp exterior or extend shelf life.

Freshness and texture depend on the recipe, cooling process, ventilation, primary packaging, storage time, temperature and humidity. A fully sealed package may retain moisture and soften the crust, while too much ventilation may accelerate drying.

The bakery should establish the packaging method and shelf life through testing with the final product under actual sales and distribution conditions.

Can cannelé boxes include a window?

Yes. A die-cut window can display the pastry arrangement and caramelized color. The opening should not weaken the box or allow unwrapped products to contact unsuitable edges.

Transparent window film and adhesive must be evaluated for the intended food-packaging application. Light, heat and condensation should also be considered.

Review our custom window boxes when selecting the window position and structure.

How should cannelé boxes be packed for takeaway or delivery?

The pastries should remain upright and separated during handling. Retail boxes should not have enough empty space for the cannelés to overturn or collide.

For delivery, retail boxes should be placed inside suitable shipping cartons with dividers, cushioning or other support where necessary. A decorative pastry box alone should not automatically be treated as courier-ready packaging.

The full packaging system should undergo relevant handling, vibration and compression testing. For related French pastry formats, compare custom madeleine boxes and custom financier boxes.

What are the MOQ, price, sample cost and production lead time?

The minimum order quantity for custom cannelé boxes is generally 1,000 pieces per design, with prices starting from approximately US$0.10 per box.

Final pricing depends on the dimensions, paperboard, structure, number of cavities, food-contact components, window, printing, finishes, ribbon, handles, quantity and packing requirements.

Custom sample production normally takes 3–7 days, with sample charges starting from approximately US$50. Sample delivery generally takes an additional 3–7 days. Mass production typically requires around 7–15 days after artwork and sample approval.

For an accurate quotation, please provide the cooled pastry dimensions, number of cannelés per box, required quantity, preferred structure, food-contact requirements, insert layout, artwork, window or accessory requirements, packing method and delivery destination.
